Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about kombucha and how great it is for your gut. Kombucha (AKA 'booch) is one of the easiest and tastiest ways to get your daily dose of gut-friendly bacteria.
In case you have been living under that rock, kombucha is a fermented, fizzy tea that is chock-full of tummy-taming probiotics. The drink begins with a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast), which serves as a starter to grow the healthy bacteria and yeast. The probiotics in kombucha are known to ease digestive issues, ward off parasites, and restore good bacteria in the body, and can even boost your mood!
Not all kombuchas are created equal, though. We've got a few things for you to look out for to make sure you're picking the best 'booch for your body:
Rule Number One - Always Opt for Organic
Organic ingredients are important overall, but particularly in kombucha. If companies don’t care enough to go the extra step to get certified organic, they may have lower quality standards.
Plus if it's not organic, it may be pasteurized, which means it doesn't have any of the good, raw stuff so you're losing all the probiotic benefits. That's what we're drinking it for in the first place, right?
Look for glass bottles. Though not totally necessary, it's even better if they're amber or dark glass. Never buy kombucha in plastic or metal containers.
Read Those Labels
The ingredient list should be short and easy to understand. If there's any ingredients you can't pronounce or sound like they were cooked up in a lab somewhere, just say no. Kombucha only needs water, tea, sugar, and the probiotic colony of sugar and yeast. Different varieties will use organic whole foods (fruits, veggies, herbs, and spices) for flavor.
A note on sugar content - kombucha requires sugar for fermentation, so sugar will always be present. Just be on the lookout for added sugar. That's a no-no.
And now time for a shameless plug, we just happen to carry kombucha in both of our studios that meets all of these standards...AND it's brewed locally in Sarasota. Pick up some 221BC Kombucha after your next class. Your muscles and your gut will thank you!
