Fit Tip Friday: Five Minute Meditation

Feeling stressed, anxious or sluggish lately? Try some simple meditation in the morning to relax your mind, focus and energize you for the day.

We've been hearing a lot about the benefits of meditation recently (reduces depression, anti-aging effects on the brain, reduces pain and stress, etc.), but many people just don't think they have the time. We have three simple steps for you to start your day off right in less than five minutes...and you can even do them while you're still in bed!

1. Affirmation or Gratitude
As soon as you wake up, repeat an affirmation to yourself three times or think of three things for which you are grateful. Something as simple as repeating "thank you" to yourself can really set a positive tone for your day. Starting your day with gratitude gives you a happiness boost before any negative thoughts can enter.

2. Breathe
It's pretty simple, just breathe. Focus on your breaths and think "inhale" as you inhale, and "exhale" as your exhale. Focusing on these words will help keep outside thoughts from entering your mind. Give yourself at least 10 breath cycles here.

3. Intention
Lastly, set your intention for the day and repeat it to yourself three times. This will set a positive tone for your day.

Find one that works for you on that particular day. Here are a few examples if you don't know where to start:
  • I am energized and ready for the day.
  • I will make someone smile today.
  • I intend to forgive others, and myself.
  • I can take on anything this day brings me.
That's it! Simple and to the point. Give it a try tomorrow morning!
